Safety and Security Window Film for Schools

Back to Blog Posts

Schools face a variety of security and safety challenges, from severe weather to forced-entry incidents. 3M Safety and Security Window Film is a cost-effective way to add an extra layer of protection to schools — helping deter and slow down intruders, giving first responders more time to arrive and assist.

Because the window film helps hold broken glass together instead of letting it shatter apart, it also helps protect students, faculty, and staff near windows from flying glass during severe weather events, blasts, or break-ins.

How Does 3M Safety and Security Window Film Work?

Most 3M Safety and Security window films are made from layered heavy-duty polyester (PET) and applied directly to the window's surface during installation — allowing for visibility. These window films are tested to meet UL 972 Burglary Resisting Glazing Material standards.

The polyester has high tensile strength and flexibility, meaning it can be stretched far without breaking. When the glass is struck, the film catches the shattered pieces and holds them in place instead of falling or flying outward. Instead of shattering out completely, you'll notice a spiderweb pattern of glass held together by the film.

Installation in most schools can happen over the span of a few days by a certified installer, and the window film can be applied over most existing glazing.

What Can 3M Safety and Security Window Film Offer Schools?

Security and safety window film helps protect schools against:

  • Break-ins: Slows down intruders, deterring them and buying extra time during a lockdown situation
  • Storm debris: Helps prevent windows from shattering when struck by blown-around objects
  • Blast mitigation: Can reduce the risk of being injured by flying glass caused from a blast

Is Safety and Security Film Bulletproof?

No — 3M Safety and Security Window Film is NOT bulletproof. Though it can keep the glass from shattering, no adhesive film on its own can stop a bullet.

Spaces requiring bullet-resistant protection should consider other bulletproof glass/window options with a UL 752 rating.

For most schools, though, security window film offers a more cost-effective way to meaningfully increase safety without a full window replacement.

How Does Security Film Give Responders More Time to Arrive?

Because the security film helps keep the window from shattering out completely, it takes intruders significantly longer — often several direct blows — to break through the window compared to untreated glass.

That delay can be the difference between a fully locked-down, secured classroom and an open point of entry, giving law enforcement and first responders time to reach the scene more quickly.

Does Security Film Still Offer the Benefits of Standard Window Tint?

Yes! In addition to its safety benefits, 3M Safety and Security Window Film also:

  • Rejects UV rays and heat
  • Reduces heating and cooling costs
  • Reduces glare in classrooms

Schools get the added protection without giving up the energy-efficiency and comfort benefits of standard window film.
